Breastfeeding In Public

Is it Porn??

That is the Question.

Some are offended, others disgusted, and some are aroused at the sightings of a breastfeeding mother.

The mothers are usually outraged at peoples reactions.

“WHY? why all the fuss?? Im just feeding my child!” They say.

Heres what I think…

Breasts ARE sexual. point.

While society for the most part is okay with women wearing low cut shirts and bikini tops, they are not too accepting of a mother exposing part of her breasts to feed her child in public.

I understand this.

Just imagine it the other way around: If men had to feed our children trough their penises. I KNOW I KNOW. WEIRD AS HECK but just stay with me here…

Lets say, men gave birth and then penis fed their off spring.

HOW WEIRD would it be to stand in line at Auntie Annes in the mall, then turn and see a man a few feet away just whip it out and put his baby on it?

UM. yeah.

why? because we’re simply used to seeing our sexual body parts used for sexual purposes.

adding a child to something that is sexual…is wrong in most cases. AND thats why I think people have a hard time accepting breastfeeding in public.

to accept breastfeeding in public people would have to desexualize breasts and adopt a new mindset.

The mind set that breasts were meant to nurture babies and children.

But since breasts were also created for sexual purposes, I believe its only fair to meet society half ways and compromise.

We cannot expect for people who have been used to soda their whole lives to suddenly accept water. SO why do we get mad and stomp our feet because people are not used to seeing our breasts used for something other than a sexual purpose??

If we want people to be more accepting of breastfeeding in public, we must meet them half ways. It cant just be what we want.

That is why I think its important to breastfeed modestly.

Breastfeeding in public with a nursing cover on is the most appropriate in my opinion. And even then some might still be bothered, but i believe society for the most part would be more accepting of breastfeeding in public if more women wore a nursing cover.

I think you may want to rethink your argument. First, yes, you do use a weird analogy when asking us to consider a man feeding a child through his penis. This is the place from which he urinates. Women urinate from their vagina, they do not lactate from there, and that is why they don’t feed from there. So, perhaps you may want to suggest he feed from his nipples.

And yes, men view women’s breasts as sexual objects. Men are sexual beings – by nature, easily turned on. Knowing women derive sexual pleasure from breast stimulation and seeing breasts and nipples is exciting to the male.

Which brings us to the point. In the photo above, the woman is in an automobile, with “Western” style dress, I assume she lives in a modern westernized society. Where we all have agreed for centuries to live by certain “polite” rules. Some of these rules were created for women’s safety. Think of all the sexually repressed knuckle dragging subhuman males currently walking around. Now think of the untold numbers of women who, through no fault of their own and without having exposed themselves, have been sexually assaulted. Expose those breasts (and their sexual connotations) to the subhuman dullard, and I think he would have little problem shoving the child aside and having a go for himself. So, you may want to consider safety.

Finally, one of the rules I enjoy about “polite” society, is that it prevents us from urinating and defecating in public. Though a natural body function, I don’t want to see it. I read your argument and I begin to wonder. If enough people stand up in public and whip out a paper cup and begin to urinate in it, will we be forced to witness as they say it’s their right and we need to get used to it?

Thank You for your comment. The only reason I used a mans penis in my illustration, is because a mans nipples are hardly considered sexual, if at all, and I needed something that was as sexually arousing as a womens breasts. I agree it wasnt the best illustration lol but I was simply trying to put myself in the other persons shoes and see things from their perspective. By the way the woman in the “western” style dress is me, and Im wearing a nursing cover 🙂
and yes, I agree with the point you made about safety too. women need to think about that. You also made a good point in your last paragraph, thanks for sharing!

Some interesting points here, when I was pregnant I was worried I would feel self conscience breast feeding in public but once my baby girl arrived it was just so natural. I live in England and no one would dare comment or be rude about a woman breast feeding in public but I was still respectful about where I did it. Most public restaurants have ‘breast feeding welcome’ stickers now, I felt most comfortable in places where there was a separate area for families in similar situations. My baby is now fast approaching 6 months though and I am beginning to use bottles during the day since I will be going back to work soon, but also it doesn’t feel as acceptable breast feeding a more grown up baby in public as it did when she was tiny. Also it’s just not as easy to do since she is bigger and a very wriggly munchkin! This does make me wonder Is there an age when breast feeding becomes inappropriate? I would certainly feel strang seeing a full grown toddler age3-4 breast feeding but I’m not sure why.

Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Seriously, comparing breasts to a penis?
-Making up- obscene ideas like men feeding children via their penis to discourage pubic breast feeding?
Finding the most exposed breast feeding photos to try and prove a point?

By your logic, men cannot go shirtless either, because breasts are sexual and as you aware, a man also has breasts and nipples. An attractive man is sexualized by his chest, therefore it should also be inappropriate for men to ever be shirtless in public. Its indecent.

I hate to break it to you, but the sexual objectifying of woman’s breasts is due to people like you. You are part of the problem. Breast feeding is not sexual and people like you, who treat it like it is, are part of the problem.

Also, you have walked by countless mothers publicly breast feeding without even noticing because the majority of women don’t actually let it all hang out like you tried to insinuate they do from the pictures you have used.

Things tend to sound dumb when one cannot understand them. I chose the pictures I did, not to say “ALL” women breast feed that way, and I am definately NOT discouraging breastfeeding in public! I do it all the time! In grocery stores, hair salons, at the mall, ect! I am simply… PROMOTING ….a little something called …modesty.

I am SURE Ive walked by countless women breastfeeding and didnt notice due to their modesty! I did not try to say ALL women let it all hang out in public. The pictures I used were to display the TYPE of breastfeeding in public that people are usually offended by.

Men have breasts and nipples, yes, BUT they do not get sexual stimulation from them the way we do, nor do women feel the same type of arousal a man does when he sees a womans breasts. basically a mans nice chest is the equivalent of a womens nice legs. its sexy…but not the same as seeing an actual sexually stimulating organ. Therefore mens breasts and womens breasts are really not the same on any level.

I never said breast feeding was sexual. breastfeeding is beautiful and pure. I did however say that since breasts ARE a sexual organ created for our sexual pleasure, AND were also made to feed our children, then why should we expect people to only see breasts as mere feeding tools? I would understand this concept had breasts been made “ONLY” for the feeding of our children. But they were not. therefore, I think a little modesty goes a long way.

Ya cant always have your cake and eat it too, this “if you dont like it,dont look” phrase, means? Suppose I like looking (I’m a male) does that mean I’m granted free access to look ?

    • rainbows123 April 13, 2013 at 6:49 am #

LOL hahaha…Yeeea Im prettee sure they’d have a problem with you liking and looking.

      • troyeittreim May 31, 2013 at 2:59 am #

Brad poses an excellent question. And I believe you quite accurate in your response. So how then do these women determine whether he likes what he sees or is simply observing? They cannot know his thoughts. And because they cannot know his thoughts, and because he is a strange man looking at their chest, and baby, is he not automatically suspect? Automatically labeled? Weird, perverse?

      • rainbows123 June 7, 2013 at 6:46 am #

personally I dont know any breastfeeding moms who have had men ogling them so I dont know theyre reactions. but I personally have had it happen to me and it just feels kind of awkward lol. I could tell what his thoughts were because he stared at my chest, smiled, then couldn’t look me in the eye as he talked to me. yeah. weird haha. just imagine a pretty girl looking at your boner in public. you might feel a bit awkward flattered. but if its a tall obese lady with a hairy mole on her face you might not feel the same so It depends on whos doing the staring too. on the other hand, a few days ago a guy actually had the nerve to give me a disgusted look (and i had my nursing cover on!) so I shot him the look of death. he looked down quickly at his book and didnt look up again. I hope he sees that face in his sleep at night haha.
